The pressurized hydraulic fluid that powers these winches makes them lighter, more powerful, and able to withstand longer running than electric winches. They are often used on the most heavy duty pulling applications such as long pulls, towing applications, or on construction sites. A compatible hydraulic pump and system are required for proper operation.
For winch sizing, a general guideline is to choose a winch line with 1.5 times the breaking strength of the winch, and choose a winch hook at least 1.5 times the breaking strength of the line. However, application and other variables can influence the breaking strength you need.
