Crack Detection Penetrants

Inspect welds for cracks, leaks, or other defects that can lead to weld failure using these products, which are applied to the weld to make the flaws visible.

Visible Dye Penetrants, Developers, & Kits

Also known as color contrast penetrant, this product uses a colored dye that is visible under normal white light to reveal leaks and cracks on nonporous surfaces, including ferrous and nonferrous metals, ceramics, and glass. Clean and dry the welded joint, and then spray the penetrant onto the joint and let it sit for the recommended amount of time. Then wipe away excess penetrant and spray on a developer to make the flaws visible.

Fluorescent Dye Penetrants & Developers

Apply fluorescent dye to a welded metal surface and then shine a UV light along the surface to make fine cracks and leaks visible. Fluorescent dye penetrant provides more contrast than visible dye penetrant and is better suited for finding very small cracks. To use, clean and dry the welded joint, and then spray the penetrant onto the joint and let it sit for the recommended amount of time. Then wipe away excess penetrant, spray on a developer, and shine a UV on the area to make the flaws visible.

Magnetic Particle Penetrant

Quickly find cracks and leaks on ferrous metal workpieces with this magnetic penetrant. To use, magnetize the surface and apply the penetrant according to the directions. Cracks and flaws create a disturbance in the surface's magnetic field that causes the particles in the penetrant to cluster together, making flaws on or near the surface visible. Unlike dye penetrants, the surface does not need to be cleaned before or after the magnetic penetrant is applied. Magnetic penetrant can be used at a wide range of temperatures and will not penetrate the surface when it's applied.
