About Center Drills

These center drills combine a small pilot drill and countersink to find the center of a piece of stock and create a recess for a live- and dead-center tail-stock center on a lathe. They drill a small pilot hole then expand the hole using the countersink, leaving a small gap at the bottom of the hole that helps protect live and dead centers from damage. While a center drill can drill a hole similar to a spot drill, a spot drill is stiffer and is available with different angles for use with a variety of drill bit angles.

Access hard-to-reach workpieces with these extra long center drills. They have a plain tip, which is the standard choice for creating center holes in workpieces to prepare them for turning between centers.
